It's been around 5 years since most of them got out, and I still thank the drug rehab centers. They gave my friends a second chance at life. We're still working on two of our friends. I'd like to think they aren't doomed to be drug addicts for the rest of their lives. That's why I keep telling them to go to a rehab center, but each time they seem to be doing a good job, they fall into a relapse. It's difficult to talk about this, and that's why I chose to write about it. I feel like I should warn people that haven't gone through what I've gone... to prepare them.
One of the professional hats I wear gives me the opportunity to greet adolescents as they are checked into a residential treatment center for substance abuse and addiction. The other day we greeted two individuals who arrived at nearly the same time. Such occasions are always accompanied by a bit of anxiety as we often don't know what shape the person will arrive in. Drugs and alcohol don't typically bring out the best in a person, you know...
I'm not saying that some people can't make it with short-term treatment. Many do. But if you want to end the worry and frustration, bite the bullet and find a way to get help in a long-term drug rehab program that's proven to have a high success rate.
Once you can admit you have a problem, you can start on the path to recovery. You need to get yourself into a treatment center. The benefits of a drug rehab center cannot be overlooked. Not only does it help you get off the drugs, but the professionals there will work to support and help you, teaching you how to get back on track in life and really regain your life in general.
Alcohol treatment is crucial business. In a treatment center for alcohol abuse, there's very little to be thrilled about. They keep precise hours and firm diets. When you're out, more than just keeping off the booze, you get a chance at a new life. You can't blame any individual for the drinks you take. You must be clever enough to understand how much you can hold, and never go beyond that. If you made a habit of it, you would spiral out of control in a very short period, and an alcohol treatment center is where you would end. It's a decent place, I know, but I promise you it is not a nice experience.
Whether you or a loved one grappling with drug addiction, there is need for you to know that you can achieve whatever you want if you set your heart to it. In other words, where there is a will, there is a way. It is quite possible for you to quit if you REALLY want. Look at it this way. You made a choice to take to drugs and substances. Similarly, it is possible for you to decide to quit. Any excuse you may have is because you are not really ready to quit. Will you allow me to put your hand into the fire? No? Then it means that you can decide to say no to drugs and substances.
Go to Alcoholics Anonymous, or a drug treatment center. None of this is easy; no one is pretending it is. Remember, though, that you caused very real pain and suffering to your spouse with your bad behavior. You will have to make up for that, as well. This will not be simple or easy either. It will take time to restore trust, affection and closeness between you.
Start planning the practical matters. Consider when would be a good time to stage the intervention, and think about where you want to hold the event. Your interventionist should be able to give you some good advice on these matters. Make sure the drug intervention is held at a time and place where the addict is not likely to be high.
