Former Tory MP Charlie Elphicke, sexually assaulted two women in 'almost identical circumstances,' nearly a decade apart while his wife was away, a court has heard.
Elphicke, 49, the MP for Dover from 2010 to 2019, has repeatedly denied groping two women, trying to kiss them, and then describing himself as 'naughty'.
The first incident was said to have involved a woman in her early 30s who was invited to share a drink at his London home in 2007.
Former Tory MP Charlie Elphicke (pictured with his wife Natalie Elphicke) told a court he was 'besotted' with the Parliamentary worker who he is accused of groping
The second complainant is a parliamentary worker in her early 20s who Elphicke propositioned and allegedly groped in Westminster in April 2016.
She also accused him of running his hand up her leg towards her groin in a separate incident the following month.
Cross-examining Elphicke at Southwark Crown Court, prosecutor Eloise Marshall QC said of the second complainant's evidence: 'She appears to be telling lies about you which are almost identical to nine years earlier (involving the woman in her 30s).
'Is it an incredible coincidence these two women are making up - according to you - exactly the same lie?'
Elphicke replied: 'I cannot account for what they are saying.
'I can say I did not sexually assault either of these women.'
The prosecutor said: 'The issue for this jury is who is lying and who is telling the truth.'
Elphicke replied: 'The jury has to decide who is guilty of these crimes.
'I did not sexually assault these women.'
Giving evidence for a second day, Elphicke told the 11 members of the jury that he was not attracted to the woman in her 30s, but that he wanted to 'have a physical relationship' with the second complainant, a parliamentary worker more than 20 years younger than him.
The 49-year-old said he invited the woman for a drink and told her he liked her, thinking their feelings were 'a two-way street'.
The former MP (pictured outside Southwark Crown Court with his wife) denies three counts of sexual assault
He said: 'I said to (the woman) how much I liked her in many ways and how I had not, er, met someone like her for a very, very long time and how I was clearly liking her a lot.'
Defence counsel Ian Winter QC asked: 'How did you feel about her?'
Elphicke replied: 'Besotted.

I thought she was just amazing.
'I hadn't felt like this in years. I thought it was a two-way street and she felt the same about me as I did about her.'
The woman did not feel the same way, the court heard, although Elphicke said he did not initially receive an answer after he propositioned her.
Giving evidence at Southwark Crown Court he said the Parliamentary worker was 'lovely and wonderful' and told jurors he texted her: 'Goodness I need a stiff drink!' before meeting her for a drink.
They 'gossiped' and discussed how much they enjoyed spending time together for two hours before parting ways at around 8pm.
The court heard that the former MP later invited the young woman to his flat in central London where he waited for several hours.
However when she did not arrive, Ephicke told jurors: 'I felt like a complete idiot.'
Defence counsel Ian Winter QC asked: 'Did you think she would find the attention you gave her unwelcome or made her feel uncomfortable?'
Elphicke replied: 'No.'
RELATED ARTICLES [# Previous] [# 1] [# Next] [/news/article-8510093/Naughty-Tory-Charlie-Elphicke-49-told-woman-20s-not-happily-married-grope.html 'Naughty Tory' Charlie Elphicke, 49, told parliamentary...] [/news/article-8526983/Charlie-Elphicke-denied-sexual-assault-claims-Conservative-partys-deputy-chief-whip.html 'Naughty Tory' MP Charlie Elphicke says claim he assaulted...]

Share

During the trial, Elphicke denied pulling the woman onto his lap and planting a 'disgusting, slobbery' kiss on her open mouth and denied running his hand up her leg towards her groin.
He insisted any touching was 'social' and 'normal' and denied allegations that he shoved his hand down her top and fondled her breasts.
Ian Winter QC, defending, asked Elphicke: 'When having those kind of friendly conversations were you touching her at all?'
Elphicke replied: 'No.'
Asked whether the conversation went any further, Elphicke said: 'I texted her how much I liked her in many ways and how I had not met someone like her for a very, very long time and how I was really liking her a lot and I wanted us to take our relationship to a different level.'
Mr Winter asked: 'How do you think now you actually felt about her on that day?'
Elphicke replied: 'Besotted.

I thought she was just amazing. I hadn't felt like this in years and I said to her when was the last time you felt like this and I thought it was a two way street.'
The former Dover MP told a court that 'no unusual physical contact took place' between himself and the Parliamentary worker
When asked by the lawyer if the worker had made clear she did not feel those things for him, Elphicke went on to say: 'No.

We then discussed that we should meet up on her birthday. I was thinking effectively on neutral ground.'
He added: 'I would only have touched her in a normal, social form of touching.
'I might have touched her shoulder, her upper arm, I might have touched her hand, but no unusual physical contact took place.'
During the trial, it was revealed that Elphicke, who also denied trying to kiss the worker 'on an open mouth', asked the woman to call him when she got back home after the meeting but she allegedly replied: 'Sorry my phone died.

All good. See you tomorrow.'
When asked by Mr Winter if he propositioned her, the MP replied: 'Yes. I was very struck by her and I lost my head over her. I thought she was lovely and wonderful.'
However when he did not receive an answer from the young woman he told jurors: 'It was left out there and not answered, really.

I thought she was thinking about it.'
Later that month the alleged victim was said to have sent a message to Elphicke which read: 'Still in bed now. Cat has come in for cuddles.'
'I thought that was very overt and I thought it was an indication of her interest in me,' Elphicke said.
'What do you mean by overt?' the QC asked.
'Overtly flirty,' Elphicke replied.
In court Elphicke told jurors he was 'testing the waters' by sending texts to the Parliamentary worker.
The former MP said the pair exchanged emojis and the woman had 'blown him a kiss' in one text while he sent her 'four dancing flamenco lady' emojis in another.
The former government whip was asked about a message in which he joked with the woman: 'There's a lot to be said for a little horse play' followed by a 'devil emoji.'
Elphicke, who appeared at Southwark Crown Court (pictured), is also accused of sexually assaulting another woman at his Belgravia townhouse in 2007
The young woman allegedly texted Elphicke saying: 'I've seen your picture with a horsey' after he tweeted a picture of himself to which he responded with a suggestive pun, jurors heard.
'Right.

So within four days of realising you have feelings for her you're suggesting a more physical relationship?' Ms Marshall asked.
'I was testing the water and seeing if the exchange carried on in a similar format,' came the reply.
A court also heard how the former MP sent a message to the woman saying: 'Am bored' when she dodged his efforts to engage in 'sexual activity' in the apartment while both his wife and children were away, jurors heard.
'Exactly what you were trying to do was get this young girl over to the King's Road to get her close to your flat.
'You had a short window to get her over to your place and you were putting on the pressure,' Ms Marshall said.
'No,' came the reply.
'What did you think on your version of events was going to happen that morning?' the prosecutor asked.
'I hoped she'd come round and we'd spend some time together,' Elphicke said.
Elphicke denied he was 'buttering up' the young Parliamentary worker with compliments before allegedly sexually assaulting her and told jurors that 'emotions started creeping in' when he became impressed with her.
He said he realised he was developing an attraction towards her when they met for a drink in April.
'I was becoming a bit more impressed with her and I think that's when the emotions start creeping in,' he said.
'It wasn't until 18 April that you started to think: 'Actually I really like her.' You started to recognise your own feelings, yeah?' Ms Marshall asked.
'Yes,' came the reply.
The former MP told jurors that he again propositioned the young woman about a sexual relationship, but she turned him down and said while she appreciated his friendship she was concerned a romance might 'end badly' for her.
He said: 'I thought we got on really well and enjoyed each other's company and could we take it forward?

She said to me she thought about it very hard.
'She didn't want to take it into a relationship because she was concerned it might end badly.'
The former government whip continued: 'She told me she liked me very much as a friend and we got on very well and it was fantastic but she didn't want to take it into a relationship because she was concerned it might end badly.
'She said she was worried about the impact on her and her career prospects and she thought she would lose out.
'I tried to persuade her that wouldn't happen, but her mind was made up, and I accepted that position.'
The woman allegedly messaged a friend at the time confiding that Elphicke had 'pushed' her until she was forced to 'hammer' the point home.
The former Dover MP is also accused of kissing and groping another woman at his Belgravia townhouse in 2007 and chanting 'I'm a naughty Tory' while chasing her around the house.
Giving evidence about the incident, Elphicke claimed a 'sexy atmosphere' developed when he invited the young woman to share a bottle of wine with him and said she was 'handsy' and led him to believe that she was open to his advances.
Eloise Marshall QC, prosecuting, asked: 'What was it about the way she was touching you that led you to believe that she wanted you to kiss her?

So that just grabbing your arm there, did she touch your arm?'
Elphicke replied: 'I don't recall.
'Just friendliness, kind of handsy, touchy feely, feeding me chocolate stars and playing this game where we fed each other in turn.'
Speaking about the night, Elphicke said the duo were having 'what you might describe as a 'sexy conversation'.
He said: [https://themomsite.hpage.com/what-to-do-when-you-re-bored.html https://themomsite.hpage.com/what-to-do-when-you-re-bored.html] 'I believe it was silly, flirtatious, I was joking, she was giggling.

It was not - as she described it - in that kind of way.'
He added: 'We got chatting, it was a nice summer's evening, we went outside in the garden and opened a bottle of wine.'
The former MP went on to describe how the woman became 'tactile' as the pair shared some wine at his home and told jurors: 'She was handsy and feeding me chocolate stars.'
He added: 'She was feeding me chocolate stars.

We were playing this game, feeding each other in turn.'
When asked by the prosecutor if he had chanted the term 'I'm a naughty Tory' at the woman, Elphicke replied: 'I did not say that.'
He also denied smacking her bottom and groping her breasts.
The woman allegedly ran downstairs where she made a distressed call to her sister and recounted the incident over the phone.
She fled the house 'sickened' and the father-of-two apologised for his actions the following day, the court heard.
Elphicke accepted the woman 'hesitated for a period' after he kissed her and said she became 'very cross' moments later but insisted he had thought the interest was mutual.
He claimed he was left sitting on the sofa in a state of shock as it dawned on him that he had had a 'misapprehension.'
Ms Marshall said: 'I listened very carefully to what your barrister said to (her) when she gave evidence.
'He said she hesitated for a period, to think about what happeed.

She didn't get a chance to comment on any positive action on her part.
'So I'm asking you, what did she do back when you kissed her?'
Elphicke replied: 'She kissed me back. My belief and my recollection is that she did at least initially respond positively.'
Asked what happened after the woman pulled away, Elphicke said: 'She was very cross because she didn't want to be kissed.'
Elphicke said he and the complainant spoke at a future occasion during which he apologised for kissing the woman.
He said: 'I recall apologising to her.

I apologised for being under a misapprehension that we wanted to kiss.'
The former MP, from Dover, denies three counts of sexual assault relating to the two women.
Describing the status of his marriage, Elphicke went on to say: 'It hangs by a thread.
I've got a lot of work to do. She's most upset that I didn't tell her at the outset.'
He added: 'I've made a complete mess of everything. '
During his appearance in court, Elphicke also broke down in tears as he told jurors he was mourning the death of colleague Jo Cox when one of his alleged victims accused him of being in an 'awful mood.'
The case was adjourned until Wednesday morning.
Here's what we think so far.

Jessica Dolcourt/CNET

I've just completed my second day with the [/news/how-do-you-sell-a-1000-phone-during-a-pandemic-with-note-20-samsung-has-a-plan/ Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G]. Samsung's phone and I are starting to get into a nice little groove. I've already fallen deeply in love with the signature bronze shade of the $1,300 flagship device, and the fact that its matte finish deters fingerprints.
It's sleek and beautiful -- until you get to the massive camera bump -- but also enormous, awkward for my smaller hands to maneuver and perplexing when it comes to certain design decisions. (And keep reading for more on the standard Note 20, which costs $1,000.)

For more like this
Subscribe to the Mobile newsletter, receive notifications and see related stories on CNET.

So far, I've taken rich, enticing photos and enjoyed all the bounty an exceptionally large 6.9-inch screen can bring. I've fielded phone calls, kept up with work and social networks, bought groceries touch-free and navigated with Google Maps -- all the things you might normally do with your phone on a given day.

It's still early on and my testing period will have a lot to cover, from night photography and a new suite of S Pen gestures to a steady observation of battery life on a 6.9-inch display with a 4,500-mAh battery and a default 120Hz refresh rate. There's one other big question I'm looking to answer by the time the Note 20 Ultra review period is complete: how a device built to keep you active in society fits into a world already changed by the [/news/will-the-coronavirus-end-soon-according-to-experts-heres-how-it-could-get-worse/ coronavirus pandemic].

That Note 20 Ultra camera bump means business.

Juan Garzon/CNET
Note 20 Ultra: Here's what I love right nowThe bronze color with the matte finish: sleek, sophisticated and less of a grease trap when slick or grimy hands get all over it. It's lustrous and understated without being boring.Taking photos is fun. Images are vivid and 5x optical zoom keeps picture quality high enough to make me keep using it. Ultra-wide angle photos are always a great tool to have in the photo arsenal to provide dramatic effect. The screen, as always, is bright and brilliant, excellent for reading the news, watching video and scrolling through photos. My favorite Galaxy Note tricks return to life, like taking a really precise screenshot using the S Pen, using the magnifying tool to read online menus and too-small font, and easily creating a screen recording or GIF of a portion of the display.Taking a selfie using the S Pen is a breeze when you press the stylus button with one hand without having to stick your arm out at an awkward angle or worry about dropping the phone.Face tone filters for selfies are nice to add some warmth or step on the breaks if a picture is oversaturated. Phone calls sounded great in my area, but of course your situation could vary depending on the service where you live.

On the left: close up on auto mode. On the right, the phone prompted me to choose 2x zoom and lean back a bit. After an uneven first day, Day 2 was more like what I'd expect for a flagship phone -- whew. At 10:30am it was fully charged and freshly disconnected from the charger. Exactly 12 hours later after a day or moderate-to-heavy use that included an hour and a half of Google Maps navigation, it was at 35%. This was using the default 120Hz screen setting. Let's see how tomorrow goes.

That camera bump is hard to ignore. Without a case, I constantly worry about dropping it and cracking the camera array, which would undoubtedly be the first thing to hit, or else laying it down and dragging or moving the device in a way that scratches the camera. This has happened to me before and ruined every ultrawide image thereafter, so trust me when I say this is no idle concern.

Now playing:
Watch this:

First Look: Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra

6:05

The S Pen placement may be something I simply need to get used to, but so far, the move from the right side of the phone to the left isn't working all that well for me. There's nothing inherently wrong with the design, but for some reason reaching for it feels like a chore. Did it move to accommodate the camera hardware? We'll see if I warm up to the changes as the tests go on.

Wired headphones don't come in the box. That may not seem like a big deal as Samsung transitions users toward wireless earbuds like its [/news/samsung-galaxy-buds-live-review-wireless-earbuds-galaxy-beans-dont-buy-them-for-noise-canceling/ Galaxy Buds Live]. But not everyone wants to invest in a set of wireless buds. More to the point, Samsung spent years touting the $99 value of the wired headphones that came in the box. Without them, the Note's price keeps going up while shedding value. If you don't already have headphones you want to use, your cost of ownership just went up.

It can get a little toasty. My CNET colleagues and I have noticed the Note 20 Ultra seemed to both generate and dissipate quite a lot of heat. Nothing out of the ordinary, just an emanating warmth that phones (and laptops and other electronics) can get when they're working hard. On a hot summer day, it wasn't the most pleasant sensation in my pocket and hand, but definitely not a dealbreaker.

Taking the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra camera for a spin [ pic.twitter.com/l0OHolgTGC]
— Jessica Dolcourt (@jdolcourt) [ August 6, 2020]

window.CnetFunctions.logWithLabel('%c One Trust ', "Service loaded: script_twitterwidget with class optanon-category-5");

What will we test tomorrow?
There's still so much to see as the Note 20 Ultra begins to settle in as my daily phone for the next week. That means the stylus' new gesture features, night photography, gaming, new tricks with the Note app and more. Check back as this review develops day by day. And scroll to the very end for all the specs.

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra reminds me of a figure straight from Greek mythology. With its sleek profile, resplendent bronze finish (for its signature color), and thick camera bump on the back staring out like a set of compound eyes, it doesn't take much more than a glance to see this new phone for power users is very much siren-meets-cyclops.

The Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra's looks are just the beginning of the story -- and there's far more below -- including one genuinely surprising change.
id="mod_1719085">You're bored.
There's no sports events scheduled, and the nearest mall is between 20 to 50 minutes away. None of you have a car (and even if you did, gas is way too expensive to even bother right now). Options are limited; boredom runs high. What're you gonna do about it?

Well, let me tell you some of the things my friends and I would do in this kind of situation.

Find a good student/teen-oriented establishment.
Yeah, I know, there aren't many in our little communities. But there's bound to be somewhere you can go. Is there a community center in your town? A roller rink? A movie theater?

If money is an issue, consider the park. It might seem like it's more for the "kiddies," but even us teens get a kick out of fooling around the jungle gyms. There are always free beaches available, and I'm sure you can find a lake or river nearby. Heck, even a pond would do, as long as it's not filled with lilypads and pond gunk. Just be wary of leeches and swimmer's itch. Oh, and chiggers. Nasty little buggers, they are...

Still think that's lame? There's always Wal-Mart. :-P

Read the newspaper.
"Dude, newspapers are lame. They're for old people!" Not necessarily. Most city/town/county newspapers will have listings of events that you might actually be interested in, such as art fairs and car shows or dances and film festivals. Surprised? You shouldn't be. Counties hold regular events in an effort to gain popularity or status, or even to show pride for their heritage. Here in lovely Cambridge, Minnesota, there's the Swedish festival everyone's welcome to attend. Personally, I hate lutefisk... And lefsa... And all those other food items they tend to serve up. But it's never a bad idea to check it out in case you're interested.

Another thing to be looking at are the classifieds. No, not to buy something or apply for a paying job, but sometimes certain charity groups hold little events like highway clean-ups that you can volunteer for. And if volunteering's not your thing, you can swing by anyway and make fun of the greenies. Hey, at least it's something to do, right?

.
Host a movie night.
Slumber parties may have been "so elementary school," but if you take out the slumber part, it's a party. Rent some movies or have everyone bring their favorite and whip up that popcorn. You'll be enthralled for hours. Unless you have ADD/ADHD, then you're kinda out of luck.

Not a big movie person? You can still have a fun get-together with your friends with some simple board games. Monopoly never goes out of style. ;-) Of course, I always win... And if you're sick of board games, pull out that XBox or Gamecube or whatever confangled contraption you happen to call a gaming system and bring on the gameage! You can't help but feel like the "big man" when you pwn your buddies in Halo. Then again, you can't help but feel like an idiot if it's your first time playing and your boyfriend's giving you crap for being so bad, but then you're bouncing off the walls when you manage to kill him... Just that one time... And then everyone pwns the heck out of you...

... Yeah, I'm not a Halo person; can you tell?

Plan a scavanger hunt!
This was always one of my favorite things to do. And everyone knows how to do this, so you won't have someone saying, "But I dunno how to play!" Sounds childish, true, but if you mix it up a little bit, you'll seriously enjoy yourself. Try picking items that are REALLY hard to get a hold of, but keep it within city limits and reason. A good example of a few items you could put on your list:
A picture of a police officer giving the peace sign (gotta love picture phones). An old baseball. A fly swatter with fly guts on it (disgusting, but interesting). A yellow rubber duckie. A newspaper article with every letter of the alphabet in it. A school calander. A snow sled (or, if you're in the south, something similar in nature).
Just about anything will do, as long as it's legal. Seriously, getting arrested is NOT a fun thing to do.

Got a bike, man?
Schedule a bike ride around town. It's exercise, it's healthy, and most importantly, it takes up a good chunk of time. You could even make a race out of it.

If you have a smaller group of friends, you could try to get more people involved. Have your friends invite their other friends. Get your siblings in on the sports action. Encourage parents to join in. Most people enjoy riding bicycles, so it shouldn't be hard to get some biking fun in your rather boring day.

Not a big bike person? Neither am I, to be honest. Then again, I don't own one. Consider rollerskates/blades if you have them, or just a simple jog. Exercise is somewhat important, as you learned in P.E., so why not have some fun while you're at it?

Heck, even yoga will do. Most small towns don't have yoga centers (or at least, mine sure doesn't), and yoga is great for relaxation and stretching those muscles and tendons, plus it doesn't take as much effort. You can even make fun of each other for some of the funny positions included in yoga. They can be pretty funny-looking. You're bound to crack up with laughter at some point in the process.

It's raining.
Yeah, it rains. Yeah, it sucks. Yeah, it makes things a little more difficult in the boredom-saving department. If it's raining, try some of the indoor activities suggested earlier. You can also consider a fun game of Charades, Guess Who, Pictionary, or a simple trivia game. Don't own one? Make one up! You're bound to know some trivial fact others might not (or you think you know one others might not, anyway). Try to stay inside, though. Getting sick is such a mood-killer.

I think we've covered the basics. Here's a little list of things to consider before you go out and entertain yourself and your friends.

Please keep everything legal. As I stated before, being arrested is not fun. And it's just not cool. Drugs run rampant in smaller communities/rural areas, and they are not the way to go. Try to consider the integrity of your group when you come up with options for relieving your boredom. Heck, consider the integrity of your generation. This goes back to that lovely problem with iPods and cellphones in schools: someone pulled a stupid and did something wrong, and thus, everyone has to pay. So when you're out having fun, please remember you are an example of your generation. It's up to you to show those old folks that you're not as bad as you're made out to be.

Got some more ideas on small-town fun? Put it in a comment! Maybe it'll get placed here!

Now for a simple poll! What do you like to do in your small town? Just hang out. Get some volunteer work under my belt. Go to the movies. Play games with my friends. Check out the local hot-spots. Check out the babes! Run around town. Nothing. I hate it here.[# See results]

[ ][ ][ ][ ]by Sam Little8

Comments
[ ] or [ ] and post using a HubPages Network account.
0 of 8192 characters used[# Post Comment]No HTML is allowed in comments, but URLs will be hyperlinked. Our town is pretty much an old train stop and there is nothing here and the town is not growing at all. Only been here two years and still have another long boring year left. All my friends live out in the country so we cant just get up and go and even if we did where would we go? To the park and play on the tire swings? Yes, it was a new and "exciting" things that we got TIRE SWINGS. Yet we have like five different places to buy liquor. I am under aged and I don't drink like all the other people here my age do so I am counting down the days until we move back to the city. I have been to other small towns and our town makes theirs look like a flipping city.

Brenna
Small town in Arizona. Just me and my dad. I want to do something with him but what? We're broke and we just live our lives on the computer, it sucks. We want to live in Minnesota but he can't find a job there. In MN we could go swim in a lake, climb a tree, live our lives. But we're stuck in this death town with nothing nothing nothing to do. Somebody help me. It's too depressing. We want to do stuff but there's nothing. It's too hot out to do anything, there are no trees or lakes or open fields here. I just wish he'd win the lottery, not so we'd be rich, but so we could be free. Let me know if somebody has a spare billion dollar bill. My mom is in Colorado there's a beautiful ditch, nature thing by our house that I used to go in. Until she got married to a complete b*sst*rd, pardon my language, and I had to get out of there. I'm stuck, nothing to do, nowhere to go. You know that saying "Money doesn't bring happiness"? Well money can buy food for starving people, shelter for the homeless, and clothing for the naked. I could move to Minnesota with money. Money does bring happiness. Why should money exist? It's just trouble. Why can't the world be beautiful like it should be? Because of the stupid, stupid people. Luckily we have lots of smart people to help. But mostly stupid idiots. Man this comment is much longer than I expected it to be. But there's so much to talk about about everything. I wish I was 18, I could go to college, get a job, get lots of money and help the world. MONEY DOES BRING HAPPINESS! It saves lives. Goodbye, I don't want to stop writing this letter but I'm going to think of what I can do for anything as an 11 year old. I'm literally counting the days until I can be free.

Tyler
I live in a small town in Tennessee.
Two gas stations and two schools.
I live in a neighborhood where nobody ever leaves there house, and besides riding my bike or jogging I don't really see a reason to go outside by myself.
The only time I see lots of people are at school, and nobody likes me.
I've been here for seven years.
My only friend isn't ever allowed to leave his house.
I'm so damn bored I'm going to explode

Amanda
i go to school out of district so most of my friends are half an hour away and there, the population is 750 people and where i actually live there is more but everyone around here is either a druggie or pregnant, or both. and it's only me and my 17 year old brother left at home, hes got ADHD, so most things MIGHT keep him entertained for about 30 seconds, and he can't drive after nine

bb
Cant even do half these things in my town...

drugluvr8
I like DRyGYUGz!!!! Wahey heck, I'm having some right nwo!!!!!!11

J
The problem with small towns is every one of them have a small minded attitude and everything closes at 6pm. Nothing is open on Sundays except church and the church is filled with zealots. Now as for entertainment, the best solution to small towns is to keep everyone busy. Drinking and drugs get boring after a while. So does the useless violence over the local whore. It's the same story in every town. Crime goes up due to boredom. My solution. Pot head cafe / strip club. Mandatory for all small towns open from 10pm to 6am, but hey, that's just my suggestion. Better to contain problems and create solutions, entertainment and revenue. Keeps people from smoking crack. Have it operate with co-op staff. A place that's open all night long is needed everywhere. It's where the trouble will be most of the time. Throw in a door crasher or 2. Problem solved. Rather people drinking coffee and smoking weed, instead of B&E's and smoking crack.

sara ann
I live in a town called Guerneville, and it SUCKS! There's literally nothing to do except go to Safeway and smoke weed and get drunk. The community events are all for middle aged gay men, no jobs so no money for cars to go anywhere, no roller rink, snow, ice skating, bowling mall or movie theater. Pointless tourist attraction stores. I'd befriend folks and get them in one place to tell about the good news. Kika Rose, way to go. You have lots of insightful tips like getting a bike. Me and my friends play card games alot. Make cookies or pies! Go fishing (yeah THAT small and hick of a town! its fun though!) If its nice out we play volleyball or road hockey. I actually love living here cause it makes you creative...not just mall or go see a movie. Chilling at the lake all day is fun too when ya have an ipod doc! That's only a summer thing tho. 4x4ing in your friends big trucks is also fun!! Im sure theres other crazy things we do but I cant think of them right now...thanks for your write ups!

Aaron
my town is in the middle of nowhere. seriously. you have to drive at leave an hour and a half to get to the next town over and the mall is at least 2, 3 hours away. like that vanessa chick there is no police department in my town. and its all desert. meaning no trees or gardens of any kind haha. but what my friends and i do and ride our quads around, everywhere we go. im 17 and there are 5 people including myself around my age that live here. and there is like 10? adults maybe. not sure on that one. we blow stuff up. my dad owns the tinyyy gas station and that's where we get our food and stuff. he doesn't work at the gas station i do. but he works at the hospital/old police department. anyway, me and my friends "own" this town and we do pretty much whatever we want to do!!!!! its fun

Maddy
There is nothing im looking for stupid website!!

vanesssaaa
Hey!!! In my smalllll town me and my friends LOVE to build things. Yeah seems kinda childish but we've made some very "BA" forts in the last few years. I live in the desert so we're always playing in the middle of sage brush. Anyway even though i'm 15 i still love to play "queen/king of the hill" and we love to play hide-n-go seek in the cemetary at night. It gives us a rush. Anddd since we don't have a police department in our town we can get away with anything. plus the skate park is pretty fun. :)

sara
this is so funny because i live in minnesota and this is the first thing i clicked on!!

me bored
i live in ireland...rural area everywhere is just a field and 3 pubs in town but if go there the 60+ men will chat u up not fun..we don't have a wallmart here but we do have two tiny grocery store shop newsagents place ,a butchers,a post office, takeaway restraunt and a communitie center(that barely opens and when it does its for old ppl dance)and an abandoned doctors clinic that is permantly closed and i hang around there mostly just withering away from boredom.waiting till im all enough toget the hell out of here!!!:(

Bobby Joe
Well thanks for tryin but this site did not help me at all I could just go for some good ol drug usage.

Putz Ballard
Coming from a small town and growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, we were never bored. Before my car went all emo, me and my friend James, that weird boy in the first picture on this hub, would drive around the back roads of Cambridge and Isanti with nothing but his guitar, a bunch of punk music blaring, and a full tank of gas. We've discovered some crazy things, I tell you what. And one time, we went to Wally World and our friend Zach had Rockband all set up, and we were playing for HOURS in the Layaway section of the store. I'm a pretty mean drummer. ;P But so help me if I'm lying, James is as flat as they come. lol!

shelly belly
Hey. I live in a small town too. Sometimes when we're so bored we'll just drive down deserted dirt roads and see where they take us. Hey we found a short cut to WalMart that way. Also i was just wondering, so other kids in small communities hang out at walmart too? lol it's so completely lame but there's nowhere else to go! all i can say is i've wasted a fair amount of time playing guitar hero at walmart.

Sarah Love
11 years ago from Bay Area
Great stuff! I grew up in small town Wisconsin and did many of these things or tried to get others to do them. It helps if you have some great friends! Why not make up something fun to? Me and my friends make short films when we're bored. Actually, me and James (that goofy looking guy in the first picture up at the top) are working on a cyberpunk bounty hunter film concept he wants to do... xD Heck, you two can do all sorts of crap! Get a whole bunch of your friends together and take a walk around town, you'll be able to brainstorm ideas while you're walking about. As for me, I'm stuck with James being a complete dink... -_- Someone remind me why I'm friends with this weird kid...?

Stacie
Theres nothing in here for me and my friend Kelsey to do.....were board and have no money.....help us or were going to end up drinking or doing drugs. We have nothing out here!!!!!

AUTHORKika Rose
11 years ago from Minnesota
Ms Chievous, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. I live in a small town, remember? :P I know all the shady deals that go down in the little alleyways around here, and all the idiots who do them. Drug use is a huge problem out here in the Sticks, and most of it stems from the simple idea teens get that there's just nothing better to do. And I'll be completely honest, I've dabbled a bit in marijuana and alcohol. While also being completely honest, I can think of worse drugs than pot, and I've only seen a few cases here where it's gotten completely out of hand. The popular illegal substance of choice here is Meth, which is so frickin' gross I could puke at the thought, and Isanti County is one of the highest producers of Meth in the state. -_- Ah, something we've finally topped, but can't be proud of...

Tina
11 years ago from Wv
Thank you for mentioning the fact that using drugs is not a cure for boredom. I worked with teens for many years and you would be surprised that the most drug use occurs in the smallest of towns!

akeejaho
11 years ago from Some where in this beautiful world!
I have had the wonderful opportunity to discover that there is even something to do for free in the winter here as well. Oh yeah, [https://themomsite.hpage.com/what-to-do-when-you-re-bored.html https://themomsite.hpage.com/what-to-do-when-you-re-bored.html] because the bowling alley moved from Cambridge to Isanti... Dumbest move ever, but Isanti's smaller than Cambridge with a heckuva whole lot less to do in it. Thank you for the great comment! ^_^

Rochelle Frank
11 years ago from California Gold Country
Very cool hub. I live in a smaller town than yours ( no theater, bowling alley or roller rink) but then I'm a long way ahead of being a teen-- and we do have community events, clubs and volunteer activities.
This was a great list of things to do.
Oh, also I live in California--- but now in a very small town. One of my friends likes to create movies and put them on YouTube, so most of the time we're out filming. I would've suggested that, but I don't know how many people are as interested in movie-making as we are. We're actually in the process of making a horror film, which is pretty exciting. As for it being well written, well... Let me just say I'm a huge English nerd who loves to write. ^_^ I never got anything below an A on a paper, though for the life of me, I can't do rough drafts. My first is almost always my last, minus a tweak here and a thesaurus look up there. But I am so excited to write more! I just don't know what I should do next! xD

[ ]Christoph Reilly
11 years ago from St. Louis
Hi, Kika! Yea! I'm your first! Good job. I think you have some great suggestions here. I grew up in the small town of Muskogee, Oklahoma. It's amazing what fun things you can find to do If you give it a little thought. It was well-written too. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. Although Senate Republicans and President Donald Trump oppose the plan, we can look to this bill to see the Democratic position on the upper limits of who might qualify in a broad proposal:
Individuals who made less than $99,000 according to the adjusted gross income from their 2018 or 2019 [/personal-finance/taxes/ taxes] (whichever was most recently filed)College students, dependents over 17, disabled relatives and taxpayers' parentsFamilies of up to five people, for a cap of $6,000 per familySSDI recipientsPeople who aren't US citizens but do file tax returns, pay taxes and otherwise comply with federal tax law using an [ individual taxpayer identification number] instead of a Social Security number
It could soon become clear who will qualify for another stimulus check.

Sarah Tew/CNET
Here's who didn't get a stimulus check with the CARES Act

Under the CARES Act, which became law in March, these groups were excluded from receiving the first payment:
Single taxpayers with an [/news/stimulus-check-what-is-your-agi-and-how-do-you-find-it/ adjusted gross income] above $99,000Heads of households with an AGI over $136,500Married couples with an AGI over $198,000Children over 16 and college students under age 24[ Nonresident aliens], as defined by the US government When will Congress reach a deal on the eligibility requirements?
Right now, the timeline for continued discussions remains up in the air. While Republican and Democratic negotiators have met daily to work out the details of the new stimulus package, the two sides remain far apart. If talks resume and they reach an agreement, the House of Representatives and Senate could still [ hold votes next week on the bill].

As such, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have pushed back the start of their chambers' [ August breaks]. After the sides reach an agreement, the stimulus bill won't take effect until the president signs it into law.

And while we won't know for sure until the two sides come together on the next stimulus package, we have a good idea [/news/second-stimulus-check-update-heres-when-the-payments-might-be-sent/ when a check could be sent], if a new bill passes.

For more, here's what we know about the [/news/second-stimulus-check-money-how-much-could-another-irs-payment-bring/ major proposals for a second stimulus package].
